Will my laptop be able to play USA format DVDs?
I have an Acer Aspire 5735 laptop that was bought in the UK. I was wondering if it is able to play USA (region 1 encoded) DVDs?

You can change the region your DVD player will play from 5 times total, before the drive ceases to work (a firmware thing). So, once you change the region to USA, the answer will be Yes. end of line

Yes, as long as you change the region code for the DVD drive itself. Right-click on "My computer" and go to Properties. Find the "hardware" tab and click on "device manager". Alternatively, you can search for "device manager" in the "Help" section and it will link you to it. From the device manager, click the + sign next to "DVD/CD-ROM drive" and find your DVD drive. Right click on the drive, and go to "properties" again. Then go to "region" tab and change the region.

I am going on holiday to California and want to buy a laptop from Dell as it's cheaper and different options than in the UK but they don't deliver to hotels. Can you advise please? Thanks

Dell apparently has retail outlets. You can probably have your order delivered to one of their outlets for pick-up. They also probably ship via UPS or FedEx. If yes, they can ship the laptop to a UPS or FedEx location where you have to show ID to collect the package. There are almost certainly UPS and FedEx locations close to your hotel. As the pound to dollar rate is 1:2, I was thinking of getting an apple macbook air. It would be purchcased in the usa, and bought over by a relative to the uk. Will it work, and would there be any problems?

There are two issues to worry about: differing power, and slightly different keyboards. Most machines these days will work on whatever power is available, but you must be sure to check. Keyboards made for the UK have the symbol for British pounds on one of the keys, which caused a minor shuffling which I found somewhat annoying when using a UK machine. Aside from these issues, it should be fine.

Where can I buy a USB laptop charger in the USA?
I have a Compaq laptop with a maximum of 2.5 - 3 hrs charge maximum. I have a 12 hour flight from Los Angeles to Brisbane and Virgin Australia only supply USB ports. I want to be able to charge my laptop. Can anyone help? Also are there USB adaptors making the port 2 ports, because I wanna charge my iPod too.

The only thing I can find is an external battery charger. From my research USB cannot supply enough power to the charger. A typical laptop charger's output is 18.5V, 3.5A, 65W and USB ports can only supply 500–900mA @ 5V. Hope this helps!

Hiya, I'm thinking of travelling to the states for a couple of months, but would need to stay on top of work - can anyone recommend the cheapest way of getting mobile broadband on my laptop? i want to buy my gf a laptop. she lives in philippines. the server there in her area is smartbro. she has a friend that has a laptop, using windows vista. before i spend the money, just want to do my homework. i call dell and ask them the question, talk to 2 different guys, they didn't have a clue. just wondering if anyone out there can help me. thanks

Yes it will work fine. Most power is 110 same as in US. Make sure you protect your laptop with a surge protector. Power greatly flucuate in P.I.

I intend using my Compaq laptop in the US and have an adaptor for the electric plug but what will be the consequences of using a 240V laptop on US 110V voltage? Will it make any difference to the laptop or do I need some sort of transformer?

you will nee a converter but look at the back of the laptop most 220 type computers have a red switch to change voltage from 220 to 110 if not you have to by a voltage converter at radio shack costs about $25.00 U.S.

Don't take any notice of the MORONIC PRICK that answered your question. On the bottom of your charging unit you will see that it says the range in voltage is from 110 to 240 volts you just need a adapter for the wall socket. jwizle not the other one

most (if not all) adapters are made for an input voltage of 100 - 240V AC, 50/60Hz. there is no need for another adapter. you have to check the sticker on the adapter and if it says the above you're fine. the only thing to buy is a plug adapter for the indian outlets. you can also cut off the existing plug and replacing it with an indian one.

According to the USPS website, you can expect to pay about 30% of the declared value in customs tariff, but that will be the same no matter what - even if it is delivered by a person traveling.

Having bought an incomptaible generic Notebook PC battery before, I suspect battery may even be dead or have not worked as it is my understanding that like a Dell AC charger has the capability to recharge a notebook battery whether in 110V or 220V enviroment as stated in the range if you were to look closely in the fineprint on any Notebook PC charger. Having bought an incomptaible generic Notebook PC battery before, I suspect battery may even be dead or have not worked as it is my understanding that like a Dell AC charger has the capability to recharge a notebook battery whether in 110V or 220V enviroment as stated in the range if you were to look closely in the fineprint on any Notebook PC charger. How can I buy Dell laptop in the USA during my holiday?
The problem is that when I customize my Dell notebook ( XPS M1210 ) on their web they have to ship to some address in the USA but I have no address there, only hotel. What should I do? Are there any laptop stores in Anchorage or Chicago where I can customize my notebook, order it and pick it up in the shop? Please give advise to Europan ( Czech ),

Just have them deliver to the hotel... As long as the hotel knows the package is coming, i dont think it would be a problem.

Go onto to dell.com. Click place order, and choose your country. Put in your name, credit cars numbers ext. Then, click pick-up, and put in the city where you will be. Then choose a dell shop, and you are all ready.

I live in Portugal, and I want to purchase the new macbook pro. In USA it costs like 500 euros less. I thought i friend could buy it in USA and bring it to Portugal. Will they check if its his in the airport? Can he bring it in the same box he bought in or does he has to pretend its his?

Theres a chance they may check the box or ask him or open it to proove that its a computer. My sister has traveled the globe with her laptop. No one has ever questioned her about wether she owns it.

Technically he is supposed to declare to EU customs that he is bringing the laptop into the EU and leaving it there, so it would be subject to EU customs duty. But it's not likely that they'll check. If you think you are going to sneak it into the EU, I would not bring it in the same box he bought it in since most people who travel with their laptops don't bring that kind of stuff with them. It's worth noting that you will not be eligible for any warrantee/repair in Portuggal (if needed). You'd have to have the laptop brought back to the US for repairs under warrantee. And there may be some differences in what is pre-loaded onto the laptop from the US compared to what you get in Portugal.

I am travelling in the USA and want to access wifi hotspots frommy laptop in various towns and cities. Are wifi hotspots available/widespread outsie major centres. How do I access wifi hotspots? i am planning a trip to israel,i am thinking about buying a good expensive laptop here in the usa and selling it at a good profit in israel. i was in israel 20 years ago and electronics were expensive there at that time,but now i don't know and they are difficult to compare. is there something else i could/should take that would fetch a good profit and help finance my trip? thanks.

yes they are cheaper in the USA then in Israel, you are allowed to bring in one pc with you, if you have more then you will have to pay customs. Most electronics are cheaper in the States, but it might not be worth your while as customs is very strict and they will penalize you if you don't declare.

How can I buy a 220-volt laptop in the USA (because I plan to take it to Europe)? Please don't suggest to buy an 120 voly unit and use an extra adapter when I get to Europe.

Just look at the power adapter and see if will work with 220 Volts. It is unlikely that a laptop power supply will not work with both 110 and 220.

All modern laptops have integrated voltage selector and they auto switch from 110 to 220V.If they didn't have that they would be useless to business men

You could use the US Post Office http://www.usps.com/business/international/welcome.htm Or try UPS, which I think ships internationally: http://www.ups.com/content/global/index.jsx?WT.svl=Footer The cost will depend on the weight, how fast you need to get it there and whether or not you choose to insure it; for an expensive item like a laptop, I would insure it. You will probably have to fill out some sort of customs form. The websites can give you more info. Good luck.

There are no export duties in the US so that will be the end of your obligation Any duties and taxes on the other end in the Dominican Republic will be the responsibility of the recipient. You can't pre-pay those, though you could reimburse the recipient after they have paid them.
