Will a laptop (alienware M11x R3) bought from the USA work in European power outlets ?

Will a laptop (alienware M11x R3) bought from the USA work in European power outlets ?
Besides the fact that you would need an adaptor because the plug is different. Will it work normally ,nothing will break , catch on fire ? I heard something that In USA the power outlets give 110V not 220V like in Europe

Answer 1 :
Not really, i took my australian laptop to asia and put it in an outlet with the cord converter... in a village where electricity goes out randomly!!!!! Just make sure if you can, use the power cord changer and dont cut off the wire and stick it on!!! JuST KEEP IT PLUGGED on to your laptop charger.. cheers
Answer 2 :
Yes. Electronic devices like adapters for laptops, cellphones, iPods, PSP, etc. can be plugged and used anywhere in the world. They are 110-240V AC capable. The only thing you need to worry about is the plug which can easily be purchased. If you want to be sure, read the inscription on the power adapter.

Should I buy laptop in Korea or USA??

Should I buy laptop in Korea or USA?
I am going to be attending grad school (for 4 years) in Ohio in the fall. And I am visiting my family in Korea right now and my uncle wants to buy me a new laptop for graduation gift/being accepted to grad school. He and many others recommend SamSung laptop but I am not so sure because of these following reasons: I have never owned a samsung laptop before (I've had toshiba, averatec which is piece of junk, and dell) The samsung laptop is going to be in all in Korean. I am fluent in Korean but I am not so sure if I can have Microsoft Office in English for my school stuff. If I am going to have valid warranty when I get to Ohio. If I can convert my entire computer setting to English from Korean (I think I can but I am not so sure...) If buying samsung laptop in Korea is cheaper or more expensive than buying a Dell or hp laptop in USA I am looking for an everyday use laptop about 13-15 inch screen with 2.2-2.3 GHz processor (prefers Intel Core 2 Duo), 2-3GB memory with 250~350GB harddrive... if it's not too much I would like a decent video card and decent battery(I've had bad experience with Dell 6 cell battery..) If anyone ever have bought Samsung laptop and/or converted to English and brought back to USA and had problems (or not) please let me know. My uncle wants what's best for me and offered to send money if it's worth buying it in USA when I get back in the fall. looking to spend about 1,000,000won more or less. (~1,200dollars for now I guess)

Answer 1 :
The question would be, if you want a US-English keyboard or a Korean keyboard. The switching to any operating system in any language is no problem, i for example use german keyboard laptop with asian OS. Samsung laptops are very good quality and should be slightly cheaper in Korea, the specs you listed are decent, maybe 2.4Ghz and more for this price range (the Penryn series CPUs Pxxxx with energy efficient 45nm transistors). For video card make sure you get one with ATI or NVIDIA graphics with dedicated RAM (seperated video RAM), Intel are always integrated graphics

How much does it cost? Laptop&fanny pak as carry on's on Delta Airlines local USA flight?

How much does it cost? Laptop&fanny pak as carry on's on Delta Airlines local USA flight?

Air Travel - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
For US domestic flights, there is no charge for carry on. There is a limit on how much you can bring with you, each passenger is allowed a personal item small enough to fit underneath the seat which means something like a handbag or a laptop computer bag, plus a baggage that fits into the overhead bin which means a stroller or a baggage. Therefore you should be ok.
Answer 2 :
There is no charge if you are carrying those with you on the plane.

What do I need to use my UK laptop in the USA??

What do I need to use my UK laptop in the USA?
Hi - I have a UK laptop with UK 3 pin plug. I'm going to the US next week and would like to take my laptop over, but wasn't sure what I need to power it. I can get a plug converter, 3 pin to 2 pin, but wasn't sure if I need a transformer or something as the voltage is different. Thanks!
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
you wont need a transformer as the voltage in USA is less than UK. (unless its a step-up transformer) Just a standard converter will work. I looked at my Laptop charger, its rated 100v - 240v and 50hz - 60hz. this will work in UK and USA.
Answer 2 :
You will need a transformer, probably get one at Radio Shack

Can i use my laptop in USA and Canada?

Can i use my laptop in USA and Canada?
-I know i will need a plug adapter -mains here is 220v (Ireland) -it's a Compaq Presario M2000
Laptops & Notebooks - 8 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Why not. U can use it for sure. But b4 connecting know yourself about the current flowing. Bcoz it matters
Answer 2 :
You'll need a 110-volt adapter to use electronics in the United States and Canada. If you try to use a 220-volt in a 110-volt socket, it'll work great -- it'll just have half the power it needs to run properly.
Answer 3 :
of course you can, as you stated all you will need is a power adapter
Answer 4 :
all you need to have is a : adapter which could be easily bought in stores. and finally (if needed) a reliable internet source these are all that you need its that simple. Hope you have using the stunning computer over in those amazing countries. Have fun!
Answer 5 :
I managed to use my British DVD player in Jamaica by simply buying a local cable (two-pin mains plug) and Jamaican electricity is the same as US/Canada electricity (110 volts)
Answer 6 :
Use Convert Adapters.
Answer 7 :
Check the power supply... if it says 100V-240V or 110V-230V or something like that it'll work off US wall power. If it says 220V and not a range then it's an Irish only power supply and you'll need to buy a US or universal one. Don't buy a plug adapter... buy a new power cord. One less thing to have to plug in... or if it's a wall power to kettle lead just borrow one from your hosts.
Answer 8 :
yes You can use it no problem, just need a adapter for the power cord and you are set you usually can get intentaional adapters unexpensive, and the power is like 110/120 volts, your power cord can handle 120 to 220v thats what that big block is in the middle of your power cord, but your lap top will not need no more than 120v. of power to run, So my biggest advice to offer is be certain to pack it well for the trip /flight, flights are heck on computers, i travel with mine all over the world every month i am making a intl flight. just be ceratin you have a good case to secure it nice and tight with plenty of cushion, and is a good idea to clean your computer good and then lay like a soft cotton cloth between the lcd monitor and key board when you close it up to pack away , during the trip dust, etc.. which is settled down in your keyboard will result in scrathcing the crap out of your display. bring along a lan cable in case where ur going doesnt supply it for internet connection, how ever wireless is highly available everywhere you travel these days, good luck hope this was some help to you, have a great trip enjoy your time in usa and canada.

Best/safest current converter to use a USA laptop in the UK?

Best/safest current converter to use a USA laptop in the UK?
Hey, I don't want to fry another electric item in the UK. I have trouble understanding the difference between an adapter and a converter. I will be using an Acer AS 5551 in England, but it was purchased in the US. If you have experience in this area can you suggest a good reliable, converter? I am looking on amazon and found one, but i don't want to cheap out as the laptop replacement will cost more than spending enough on a good converter. Thanks! (on amazon: Power Bright VC100W Voltage Transformer 100 Watt Step Up/Down 110 Volt - 220 Volt Thanks for the response, but doesnt an adapter just change the plug itself, not covnert the wattage? Isnt that the bigger issue when charging items in other countries.
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
just buy a UK adapter. it will turn out cheaper and easier solution in the end. look at it this way - will the converter make your laptop more portable ? if you don't buy the cheapest power adapter for 5er, you'll be safe. they're usually made in the same factory, it's only the brand sticker in the end that makes the (price) difference this one is genuine btw: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Genuine-Laptop-Adapter-Charger-Aspire/dp/B003EGDCOI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=computers&qid=1291921010&sr=8-3
Answer 2 :
Anything from LewisNClark is very reliable. Their travel adapter works perfectly there with US equipment. Only the adapter is necessary, no converter is needed for UK. US laptop power supplies can take 100-240V.

Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
you'll need a different adapter to charge the laptop in the wall.
Answer 2 :
Your wifi will work fine, but your power adapter will need a converter to convert the 230v to 110v
Answer 3 :
You won't need a voltage converter like someone else wrote, because your power adapter is good for voltages between 100 and 240 volts. 110 V is used in the US. So, you'll only need a plug adapter. Go to your local electronics/electrical/travel supplies store (Tandy?) and ask for a plug adapter for the US and you should be set. It should be fairly inexpensive. Again, you don't need a voltage converter or transformer as your laptop's power adapter can already handle the mains voltage in the US. If you can't find a store in the UK, you should be able to find a plug adapter in the US too. Try Radio Shack or Brookstone. Wireless should work without any problems. There are no country-specific differences there.

Where can i get a laptop in the usa that also works in germany?

where can i get a laptop in the usa that also works in germany?
im moving to germany very soon and i wanna get a laptop but i do not know if it will work there porque they use 220 voltage
Laptops & Notebooks - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Most laptop AC Adapters are autoswitching from 110 to 240v. You'll just need the adapter so it works with the german outlet.
Answer 2 :
It is not the laptop that you are concerned about, but the power adapter. It converts the input power (220 or 110v) to the power that your laptop runs on internally. You will need to replace your power converter with one that accepts the input voltage provided at your location. You can get one from the manufacturer or use a universal after-market converter.
Answer 3 :
Germany like most of Europe uses 220v, the issue is whether your power adapter is multi switching, most are. Turn the power brick upside down and look at the label, it most likely tells you it is 100-220v in which case it auto senses the input voltage. When you get to Germany find a PC store, take your charger and US cable and ask them for a cable to fit the German power outlet sockets, that is all you need to buy. Here (in Spain) we advise most of our UK, Asian and US clients to just change the cable as the power adaptor does not need to be changed.
Answer 4 :
No problem - most laptop power adapters can take 220 Volts "as is". All you will need is a new power cord. (That's the cord that runs from the wall outlet to the power adapter. Again, most laptop power adapters have connectors on that end, so replacing the power cord is easy and cheap.) Just read the sticker on the power adapter first: It will clearly state the voltage range.

What is your state sales tax? If it's 6 percent, your laptop would cost 499 x 1.06 Or just LOOK at the numbers, and figure them out in your head. If the sales tax is 6 percent, then tax on $100 would be $6, right? So the tax on $500 would be five times that, or $30!

Anybody know where I can buy a modern TV, cellphone, digital camera, laptop, and printer that are made in USA?

Anybody know where I can buy a modern TV, cellphone, digital camera, laptop, and printer that are made in USA?
It's probably hopeless because Americans are too stupid to manufacture/design these sophisticated things, so they rely on the smarter Asians to make/design these things.
Other - Electronics - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Sadly, you will most likely have to buy it at a second hand store or steal it from a museum. You see, companies need to make a profit, and when you have competition, you have to either offer a cheaper product or service, or a better quality product or service. Now, take a look at Walmart, and tell me which of those two are most evident? You see, we want cheap stuff, so the only way to stay in business is for a company to find a way to make a product that is cheap enough that consumers will buy it, but still allow for a profit margin. Do you know what Vlasic pickles are? Read what Walmart did for them. http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/77/walmart.html I am not saying that Walmart is to blame. No, you and I are to blame. We chose to buy the products that are destroying our country. We have a major trade deficit because we shop at Walmart. There are still small regional companies out there. I live in Oregon, and I know what products are produced locally. Do I always buy from them? No, at times I do have to go buy stuff from from department stores, but I go to regional ones like Bi Mart and Fred Meyer. Sure, these companies buy products from China, but they also stock local products. Here is something else to think about. Go to http://www.dealextreme.com They have some ridiculously cheap stuff listed there, but you know what, it is cheap. I bought products from them in order to repair a friends Nintendo DS, and you know what, the parts on the broken DS were of better quality that the new stuff I bought from them. Oh well. Another example would be http://www.kasacapital.com This company hosts websites like http://www.myhotrod.com http://www.myhotprelude.com and on and on and on. Instead of using local shops, we go to these places and let them rip us off and we have little recourse to correct the problem. I disagree with the 'smarter Asians' comment, even though Asians are pretty smart, it is simply that we as Americans are allowing our greed to kill our economy for the next generation. The Vlasic article is very informative, and in some ways, very sad.
Answer 2 :
For new consumer electronics, you cannot. Why, is becuase Americans are cheap. They would sooner buy the cheap overseas manufactured goods, rather than those manufactured domestically, or nearby, from manufacturers which pay their workers a living wage similar to their own.

(for XP, the options are just placed in different tabs in vista but still same steps tho) click on START CONTROL PANEL DATE, TIME, LANGUAGE, AND REGIONAL OPTIONS click on LANGUAGES tab check INSTALL FILES FOR EAST ASIAN LANGUAGES go to ADVANCED tab choose JAPANESE on the drop down menu click on REGIONAL OPTIONS choose JAPANESE on the 1st drop down menu choose JAPAN on the 2nd drop down menu restart the pc
Answer 4 :
What do you mean by convert to Japanese ?? Change the language to Japanese , Type or read Japanese ? If you see a line on the screen, it has nothing to do with being in Japan. Most probably something wrong with your graphics card or the screen. GIVE MORE DETAILS! BTW Both Japan and US use 110v Type A (Two pin) or Type B (3 pin) plugs. You don̢۪t need any converters!

Is windows XP available (from the factory) on a BRAND NEW laptop purchased in USA

Answer 1 :
no, not really anymore. dont tell me you want xp.....vista is so much better....AND SAFER.
Answer 2 :
if your worried about vista you wont have problems if it comes preinstalled factory direct
Answer 3 :
yes, from what i know they are still available from the factory... if i were you, ill just buy a good laptop with a good processor, ram and video card and just keep vista...
Answer 4 :
Yes. Dell sells some of the Vostros or Latitudes with XP Pro installed for $99 if you order the Business Bonus or Ultimate Bonus. Gets you xp pro installed and a vista disc for upgrade later. You have to look at the small business computer section, not the home computer section.
Answer 5 :
Yes it is, but Vista is better in every way, but you can develop your own opinion on it, don't let others sway you. Its even better now that service pack one is out.

USA Voltage, will my laptop charger be ok?

USA Voltage, will my laptop charger be ok?
Hi, I am traveling to the USA on Saturday and would like to know if my laptop charger will work, the rating label reads: Input 100-240V ~ 1.7A 50-60Hz I think it will but need confirmation, also will i need an adaptor to fit into the socket for my plug to fit? I live in the UK if it makes a difference. Thanks
Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
it should but our plugs are different. you most likely will need a travel adapter.
Answer 2 :
Yes we run standard outlets at 110 to 123 max volts. Your Adapter range is 100 to 240 volts.
Answer 3 :
You'll need a 13A to US two pin travel adaptor but they are widely available. Apart from that you're fine.

If i buy a laptop here in usa, will it work fine in russia?

if i buy a laptop here in usa, will it work fine in russia?
ok so usa plug ins use 110megawatts russian uses 220 now i do have a converter for that though my mom is telling me that it will burn out and/or run very slow also is that true? because i want to buy a laptop to use in russia while i go there for vacation
Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Not Megawatts but volts yes the usa uses 110 volt and most of the rest of the world uses 220-240. laptop companies know this so there powersupplies cover the range 110-240volts. depending on the model you should also be able tochange the Video format from NTS to PAL assume that you use pal system. if its cheaper then go for it. all the best RR
Answer 2 :
in communist russia, the laptop buys you! if you're using 110 megawatts your electric bill must be astronomical!
Answer 3 :
it will work just make sure you have a power converter for russian electrial outlets hardware is hardware it all works the same just some places are different then others lol. You mom is probably old and dosent know what shes talking about most older folks never do.

What do I need for my Sony Laptop (from USA) to work in Italy?

What do I need for my Sony Laptop (from USA) to work in Italy?
The voltage in the US is 110V and in Europe its 240V (i think). So, I would like to know what I need for it to work in Italy, some kind of adaptor or converter?
Other - Computers - 5 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
The computers, as well as Laptop support volatage from 110 - 250 V so only thing that you will need is the switch so that you will be able to plug you laptop into the electricity network so you will be able to charge it. BTW in europe the standard for most countries is 220, so you do not have to worry about anything getting messed up.
Answer 2 :
hi,, good day well from what you are telling about the difference of voltage ,, well yes you have to buy a voltage converter,, they offer those at any electronic store like Fry's electronics or walmart or look in the yahoo search.. oh 1 more thing if you get to work in Italy email me yea so i can know if you got it work..good luck check the 1s link they offer more electronics then any other store
Answer 3 :
If the range of voltage acceptable to your laptop is shown as 110 - 230V, all you'll need is a plug converter, that'll allow you to plug the American style plug in the European one. They use 2 round pins, not flat ones like we do.
Answer 4 :
You will need a US to European adapter ....as the plugs are different . Its sometimes also called Universal Adapter/Convertor .... There is no Electronics in it ...its just a connector which has a US socket on one side (where ur US pins go in) and has various diff plugs on the other side ...so that u can choose what to use. U just need the right adapter as the power plugs are different in Italy. Its simple and effeicent and a MUST HAVE if ur a Business Traveller. The most certain place to get it is on the Flight or in travel stores on the Airports in US or Italy. The charger for ur laptop will handle the voltage automatically. U can also find these adapters online or in large Electronic stores ....its better coz the ones on the flight are costly.
Answer 5 :
Check your laptop rating plate - for input voltage rating if its 110V / 60Hz then you will need another adapter to connect that will step down (convert) 240V input in Europe to 110 volts where you can connect the power plug of laptop. EURO Power outlet (240V) = > Adapter => (110V) => Laptop Just ensure that there is no switch to change the voltage setting on laptop. Please refer the laptop manual for clear instructions. In case you do not have one, visit the manufacturer website and download one related to your laptop model and go through it rather than blowing up the laptop due to negligence. If you are not sure consult a technician.

Answer 1 :
Forget it. Whatever savings you will get buying the laptop in the US, you will probably get back, maybe even moreso, in shipping charges. Sending a laptop overseas isn't cheap enough to justify what you're trying to do. Honestly, I think the cost evens out when you take that into consideration. And as for taxes, well, even if you buy in the US, we still pay taxes over here buddy.
Answer 2 :
Well if you evade taxes then you are basically causing a loss to the Federal Government. The U.S government will have problems importing items. The import of goods is not going to abet the U.S during a recession. The U.S government sector is sagging so we cannot export. The U.S government will have to start importing instead of exporting.
Answer 3 :
grab a friend from the US and have them purchase the laptop you want to buy

Answer 1 :
If you buy it on Ebay, but you still have to pay shipping. Insurance would be a good idea as well.
Answer 2 :
It depends entirely on the country you are importing it to. The importing country decides what import duties to impose. Please remember that most software only works on computers built for that region. For instance, I cannot buy a laptop from the UK and run software sold in the USA. Most of it simply won't work.

I shipped a laptop from Kentucky to Iraq... not the same thing but here's my best suggestion. I used a flat rate box available at the post office. They offer wto sizes and one was big enough to fit in the laptop. I bough a small roll of bubble wrap and used styrofoam peanuts. I really back the laptop well. Flat rate boxes are around $7.00 no matter what they weigh when filled. I bought the extra insurance for something like $3.00. Because I was shipping to a military post in Iraq shipping was slow... probably about two weeks but that was more because of the military mail delivery scheduel than anything else. I found that FedEx is a bit more expensive and always finds a way to damage the box which makes me nervous in shipping expensive, delicate items like a laptop. Hope that helps !

Answer 1 :
DELL...
Answer 2 :
http://www.alienware.com if you are wanting a good gaming laptop or desktop, without having to do any of the building of it. Their prices are lower than what they use to be and have much newer chip sets in them than any other brands. Dell you have to keep fixing it, great for the person wanting to learn computers they are easy to fix and usually need it. HP is a different and can be difficult, however does not break down as often as Dell. Do not get any HP Compaq just born for issues. You didn't say what your needs are so general information is what I'm providing. Apple is going to bump up every thing to a Quad Core i7's and they will be able to chose which graphics card you want. the NVIDIA or the ATI's a lot of them will be able to do 1080p. Macbook or Macbook Pro would be able to work great for many things yes even games. Do not buy the macbook air that has to have external dvd rom to install things with if you are running a business then perhaps but for personal use I would not recommend it.

Answer 1 :
yeah you can. Nope, no cost. you'll be fine
Answer 2 :
No Problem, No Charge, Go ahead, No need to delclare
Answer 3 :
I almost 100 percent think you can. You should call your local airport and direct call to security and they will tell you conditions. Package your computer very well. Had friends fly with them in the states and had them torn apart in baggage hold dave
Answer 4 :
Carry it in your hands? And run real fast?? Just kidding. No problem taking a computer across the border. Whether they may make you turn it on to "prove" it's a computer, I don't know - probably not.
Answer 5 :
Sure you can, but be aware the US Customs (and probably Canadian Customs too) have the right to examine ANYTHING on the laptop that takes their fancy - you'll probably go through customs without any difficulty, but there's the possibility of complications. This is why many major corporations forbid their executives from having any company-confidential documents on their laptops when they travel internationally, and for goodness' sake make sure you haven't got any porn on your disks!
Answer 6 :
Yes. Yes. No.
Answer 7 :
No, you will need to declare it when entering the US. You will be given a form to fill out at the border. Keep this form and present it to the Canadian customs officials to keep ypu from being charged duty and taxes when returning.

yes
Answer 2 :
yes most european plug outlets don't accomodate american technology. try best buy
Answer 3 :
you will need an adapter, avalible from radioshack, if i am not mistaken, you will also need a voltage converter, but they can tell you for sure. be certain to take your laptop and power cord with you to radioshack so they can get you exactly what you need.
Answer 4 :
Just take a voltage convertor (110v - 220) with you, that's what i think you might need.
Answer 5 :
the sharper image I believe sells adapters that you can use that will convert the electrical current. If not sharper image, brookstone. You may even be able to find them at an airport, not sure if your airport as mega shopping.
Answer 6 :
It has been few years since i was there, but i do think you will need a transformer, do to the difference in power out put there
Answer 7 :
yes ypur laptop will work on belgium or anywhere in europe, regarding your power adapter usually most of the power adapter are autovolt menas it works on 110 V or 220 v just look at your power adapter label there is a voltage specifications when you see 110-240 vac means it is a autovolt converter no need to change buy you have to buy a adaptor plug converter most european socket use a different plug the us standard
