My brother has a laptop that is eligible for Windows 7 Free Upgrade, but Packard Bell doesn't ship to the USA?
We live in the USA and want to order the Windows 7 Free Upgrade and it seems that Packard Bell doesn't ship to the US. Any suggestions on what to do?

ask if they can connect into your computer and download it from where they are. It's possible, and you can watch the installatino take place on your computer while a tech from another country does the downloads.

They're a subsidiary of Acer. You might try going through Acer instead. Otherwise there are good odds you're not technically eligible. You might try getting wherever he obtained the laptop from to obtain the upgrade for you, too, rather than doing it directly yourself.

I was wondering when some one re routes there ip to come from a different server say through switzerland does everything change over to there jurisdiction and just wondering. Also how dose one find out the real location of a user I have been wanting to find the right answer to this question. Thanks

All you get from an Ip address is the location of the ISPs server. And however you cheat the original location of the machine is traceable by the authorities. And the laws of the country you are in, and the country you view are both valid.
Answer 2 :
1) It covers both jurisdictions since the content is being access bothed at the foreign location and your current location. In most cases proxies are not held liable for allowing one to access certain content through them, however authorities may order a release of the IP records to identify who used the proxy and then report you to your local authorities or ISP where you can be held legally responisble for your actions. 2) You can't find the exact location of a user using an IP address. The most an IP address will tell you is the major city or town they are located in and the ISP they are using. What authorities do is request records from the ISP to cross-reference an IP address with the customer's address.

Why would it be a jurisdiction question? Is the person doing something illegal in US Law or Switzerland Law? I think what you are talking about is using Anonymous type of proxy services. The idea is to NOT have others know your real IP Address and thus your location. On the receiving end there would not be any trace of the original IP Address. That's the whole idea. All of the IP connections would come from the remote proxy server, disclosing only the IP Address from that source. No doubt law enforcement could get permission in an investigation to get inside the network of the anonymous proxy service and be able to obtain the real IP address of the source computer. * I would think that unless the real IP address is somehow embedded in the proxy traffic ... you would not have a way to find the original computers location ... unless there was some other lead or information in the senders traffic that might tell you who they were and where they were. Your only recourse would be to contact, if you felt you had a valid reason (such as a network attack against you), the anonymous proxy service provider for help. They are not likely to help you unless there is a law enforcement reason. They might take action against their customer if there is a valid reason, but aren't going to tell you what they did to who.

From what I'm reading on the financial pages, you might want to wait until the first week of December or last week of November. Seems the retailers are getting scared of poor sales, and will be dumping early this year.

Most retailers drop their prices for "black friday". Where to buy a laptop of course depends on what you need from your computer. If you just want a basic entry level computer, you could even look at`Walmart, where they currently have one for sale at approx $360. If you need a high power large memory super capability computer, you might want to consider a trip to the Dell Store in Austin, they have reduced prices on their better Dell laptops.

It cost me $849 total including tax and free shipping. Black friday is also a good time...Wal Mart, from what I've heard is going to have one for $349 on black friday. But usually they're limited to 2 or 3 per store...especially on good deals like that. Get there at like 2:00 AM because people start lining up early. My mom and aunts do it every year and they get up extra early. Buy if you don't have any luck on black friday anytime before the year ends is good for sales. Once 2008 comes along the new stuff starts coming in which means higher prices.

How can I re-configure my HP laptop so I can get on the internet when I go from the USA to Germany?
How can I re-configure my HP laptop so I can get on the internet when I go from the USA to Germany?
I know I can't just log on when I get there. The system has to be re-configured to conform to the region. But I don't know how to do it, and HP wants me to PAY $150 for an extended warranty before their CS dept will help me. Can YOU help me? God will bless you for it.

If you are looking to use a data card such as the CDMA card that is supplied by Verizon, just plan on it not working and take advantage of the proliferation of 802.11B you will find. If you have a quadband Sierra card, it will work in Germany but prep for the costs.

Most playback software allows a limited number of changes to the region configuration (I think the laptop I used to use had a player that allowed 3 changes) so be careful if you are thinking to repeatedly switch the value. You may want to read some forums for your playback software discussing how to change it.

Hi there, I am a Canadian citizen and I am currently planning to visit the US this weekend. I am going to be staying over near Grove City (close to Pittsburgh) and I have a quick question. If I purchase a laptop from best buy/future shop in that area, would I have to pay any tax? (I know I would pay tax when I cross into Canada again, but what about in the store when I purchase the laptop?) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sales tax rates in the United States are dependent on the area of the purchase. Generally speaking, 7% - 9% is pretty normal. Some states do not have sales tax, however. Oregon is one state which does not have sales tax.

Crossing into Canada is something I thought would be covered under NAFTA (The North American Free Trade Agreement) and shouldn't require additional taxes.

I am going to the US for a few days and i want to take my laptop with me my friend told me that if u don't have it registered or somethign then if they see your laptop and its not registered (something about duty free) u could get fined is this true ?

I'm moving to Germany, and I plan on bringing my laptop and my printer because they are both relatively new and I spent a good chunk of change on them. So would it be worth it to take them? Can I use them in Germany? Do I need anything special? Where does it say what voltage the laptop can take? I can't find it... maybe I'm just overlooking it. Never mind about where to find the voltage... LOL I'm slow today... I found it... It says input: 100-240v on both the printer and the laptop. So that means that they will both work in Germany and I only need plug adapters right?

You'll need an adapter since their electric outlets are different from ours. Otherwise, you're good. Enjoy Germany!

You will definitely need a plug adapter. The type of plug adapter you are looking for are Type C and Type F (For pictures of these see source below). F is the most common - but one of each wouldn't go a miss and they are very inexpensive. You may also need a voltage converter as in Germany the voltage used is much higher - 230v as apposed to the 120v in the States. Maybe someone with more knowledge of this could better inform you. Edit: If it says 'Input 100-240v" on them both, then all you will need are the adapters which I mentioned.

So can i carry those without any custom duty... pls reply Now i have decided that I'll not carry my office laptop and will carry only those two old P3 laptops(which are without bills). So will these two laptops be attracted toward any custom duty ????

not sure what you mean by 'WAT', do you mean 'VAT' or Value Added Tax? If so, that applies only to the EU and not in the US. I don't believe there is a tax applicable if this is a gift and won't be resold in the US. A tax applies if your friend is importing this laptop for resale in the US. You should make sure to get courier insurance however, to cover possible damage during shipping.

As far as I know Bangladeshi citizen can bring laptop without having to pay any Government Taxes or Duties (Customs duty). I got my one which was hand-carried by one of our relatives and it is not at all an issue, provided that enough care has been taken during transit. Better to have the box and packing thrown away and put the Laptop inside its soft-covers (additional item) and carry in side-bag for easy handling. Always remove the batteries and send it in unaccompanied luggage as a safety precaution only, but not a necessary or mandated by anyone. As far as I know Bangladeshi citizen can bring laptop without having to pay any Government Taxes or Duties (Customs duty). I got my one which was hand-carried by one of our relatives and it is not at all an issue, provided that enough care has been taken during transit. Better to have the box and packing thrown away and put the Laptop inside its soft-covers (additional item) and carry in side-bag for easy handling. Always remove the batteries and send it in unaccompanied luggage as a safety precaution only, but not a necessary or mandated by anyone. I've got a macbook and i think it's too fragile, i still have until the 24th to get it returned! i paid 1500 dollars for it... =/ this sucks... i don't rly know what to do... but... any idea on how much this would cost me??

I'm not sure exactly where you're sending it from, or where you're sending it to, but here's what I found by saying I'd send it from Sao Paolo, Brazil (04552-050) to Apple in Seattle, WA (98104). I chose to send it with your own packaging, and had the custom value of $1500 US Dollars and the declared value (important insurance) also of $1500 US Dollars. I said the package weighed about 5 KGs (11 lbs). At www.ups.com, the price for sending it ranged from $152 - $195, which takes from 3 - 6 days. The $160 option (UPS Express Saver) seemed the best option if you're in a hurry, as it takes 4 days. Insurance was really only about $5, so you definitely want to make sure you get that. At www.fedex.com, the price for sending a package was $140 US Dollars. However, it was requested that I specify what was in the package, and when I specified that it was a laptop, the price did jump up to $220. I'm not sure if that's a requirement or not. It took 3 days, so you could get it there by the 24th if you send it tomorrow. I wasn't able to get a price quote at www.dhl.com because I'd have to register, and I don't feel like doing that. Hopefully this gives you an idea about whether it's cost effective to do this. Aren't there Apple stores in Brazil now? I don't speak Portugese, but maybe if you go to this site you can find a distributor to return it to there. http://latam.apple.com/buy/br/ Otherwise, you could always eBay it, though you'd probably take a hit equal to or greater than the shipping. If you aren't a US citizen you won't have a warranty outside the US. Freight charges will probably cut into it enough to make buying from the states less worthwhile (along with the hassle you'll have to go through to actually get it sent outside the US).

No doubt there are companies that will send you a laptop, but you will be subject to import duties. You can buy really good machines in Viet Nam! The prices are probably better in the US though. I would say your best bet is to have an American / Canadian friend get you a machine when they go back on vacation. Just make sure it is a trusted friend - Americans will cheat you just as much as anyone else!

I am going on holiday to the usa, and on the plane i want to use my laptop

My laptop battery is not what i used to be and will go dead in half a hour. I want to know if i will be able to use my power supply e.g. there is a socket to connect to. I am flying with travel city direct. Do they have there own power suply units? Thankyou

For what I consider to be a "good" laptop you will spend between $800 and $1500. But, if you are on a budget, all laptops feature wireless capability and some cost as little as $400. There are laptops for all price ranges, it really depends on what you want to do with it beyond surfing the web and checking email as all laptops can do that. that really depends on what your using it for - if your just poking around online and doing small tasks like light photo editing pretty much any laptop will do-- most have wi-fi built in these days.. If you want to play intensive games or do things such as edit video your going to need a "multimedia" laptop-- also size - style - etc. ..in a nut shell the low end being around $500 and the top being around $4000 --- hope that helps ..

You probably don't even need a power converter, laptops can deal with a range of voltages (will be printed on your laptop). what you do need is an adapter so that you use the American electricity outlet and a surge protector is always a good idea.

no,personal belongings are not charged customs but you have to bring it back with you.back to usa if you are coming back.

Can I transfer data from a dead English (made in USA) laptop to a new Japanese (made in Japan) Laptop?

I have a dead laptop that I want to transfer the data from. I have another laptop that I can transfer the data to. Problem is, the dead laptop was built in the USA (meaning, it's operating system is in English) but the only available laptop that I can transfer the data to is a laptop that was made in Japan (meaning the operating system is Japanese, etc). Now, my question is: Is it still possible to transfer the data from the dead laptop into the new Japanese laptop? Or would the different language operating system cause a problem? And if it's possible, how? What would work best? What do I need to buy? Thanks!

A caddy, or external hard drive enclosure does the trick & is pretty cheap too, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817145082 just pull out the hard drive from the old dead laptop & slide it into the caddy ^ & connect to usb port of your new laptop

The best is, if you have a friend or relative going from USA or UAE, you better grab the oppurtunity to ask her to carry it for you. 2nd is by sea freight.. if it not urgent and your recepient can afford to wait for at least 45 days, then go for it. 3rd will be by airfreight if it is very much in urgency.. but this will cost you much, maybe a hundred dollar or more.. It will only 5 to 7 days to reach the destination. By DHL or FEDEX will be the 2 best freighting companies. By the way, i suggest that you should ask the recepient to buy the laptop in uae. just give the specification and send money thru remittance. Im sure whatever the brand and specs of that laptop, it will be available in UAE

I've used a company called Bongo International for a almost a year now- you set up a US postal address on their site, they receive your items from Old Navy and Best Buy, etc. and put it all in one box if needed.(This saves $ on shipping.) Then they ship it overseas to you. You can track on their website the whole way, great website technology. I like this option because then you never have to worry about shipping problems, you can buy online from anywhere and the rates are very fair. My dad was givin this laptop by his friend. He doesn't have its invoice or its papers. Will they ask him about it? or no proble, he can bring it

Should be no problem. I have travelled into and out of the USA with a laptop dozens of times and there were never any questions about it. There are some export restrictions on very high end technology, but they don't apply to ordinary laptops - much less to laptops purchased abroad.
